Love everything about this little guy. Started installing them into all my older Athearn Blue Box trains and they all have worked great cant complain one bit. Love the price of them as well makes those 30 year old Athearns run like a champ, did very little work to them to have them installed, just the super easy maintenance and new motor brushes and I will say they make the old Athearns run just as nice as some of my $200-$500 tarins from the Atlas Gold to my MTH trains. Next Im gonna try the bigger one that with the sound in a few of my other athearns like the F7 and PA ones. I would rec. them to anyone especially since all the forums out there say YOU cant turn the Athearns DCC and that its a waist cause they will fry the decoder cause of amps but I have had this one in the older steel colored flywheels running the iron wheels pulling 9 Athearn tanker cars for 40+ hrs ands decoder is still running and so is train. So for all those people in the forums who talk bad on Athearns and say you waist your time turning them into DCC they shouldn't be in this hobby if you ask me. Digitrax makes a good basic Decoder here and it makes 30+ year old trains run really good.Read full review

Drops out of consist. I did clean the rails & wheels & checked voltages. Finally called Digitrax for help. Digitrax was no help what so ever, said it was a controller problem, told me to contact MRC. I got more help off a forum. Called MRC. MRC said it was a decoder problem. I do agree with MRC. It does run in solo with no problem. I am going to try a different brand.

It was my intention to use the reverse light on this 2 funtion decoder for a mars light on the front of an F7 loco. All the info I had read prior to buying, was the directional lighting could be disabled and controlled independently, and a multitude of effects were programmable for each light. To make a long story short... NOT! A great decoder if you just want headlight and reverse light.

If you are a novice like I am and on a budget when it comes to DCC then this is the decoder for you it's very easy to install if you have good soldering skills it worked perfectly on the first test just as described. One note if you are not very good or have no experience at soldering or following precise instructions I would recommend that you find someone to install it for you as model trains are small and have close tolerances and as well a mistake with this unit can be costly.
