The album "Pure Gold" by Elvis Presley was first released back in 1975, around the same time as the original studio LP, "Today". The 10 songs selected for the "Pure Gold" album represent a unique variety of songs covered by Elvis from 1956 to 1973. This collection starts off with the 1970 release "Kentucky Rain", which was first recorded during the legendary Memphis sessions of January and February 1969; next up is the haunting ballad "Fever", first released back in 1960 on the "Elvis Is Back!" album; "It's Impossible" is the only live track, being from an early-70s show in Las Vegas; after 3 mellow numbers, things kick into high gear with the title song from the 1957 motion picture "Jailhouse Rock" and the 1956 hit "Don't Be Cruel", both of which went to number one; Elvis rocks out with his rendition of the Ray Charles classic "I Got A Woman", which was also his very first RCA recording; 1957's "All Shook Up" spent 8 weeks at number one; this is followed by the title song from the 1957 film "Loving You"; the 1969 single "In The Ghetto" hit the top 5 on the pop singles charts; closing out this collection of songs is the title song from the 1956 movie "Love Me Tender", which went all the way to number one as well as being Elvis' big-screen debut. The original vinyl album features the 6 1950's songs in electronically reprocessed stereophonic sound, but on this CD, they are miraculously restored to their original monophonic brilliance. While there were many songs that should have been included here, the 10 tracks featured in "Pure Gold" work surprisingly well. They are a fine example of the music from Elvis' career. The import album of the same name includes 2 extra tracks: "Frankie And Johnny" and "Clean Up Your Own Back Yard".Read full review
