Whether you are a fan of Elvis or not, the title of the book clearly asks a haunting question that we all have asked ourselves. I purchased this book to get a better in sight of his life, and to help me answer the question for myself. However, I believe the authors came up short when attempting to tell the story, due to their biasness. I think in the end, the reader will have to surmise his or her own theory of “what happened”. But since none of us can judge, maybe we should be asking ourselves the same question when it comes to our own lives. Published a month (1st edition) prior to his death, the 332 page Elvis – What Happened?, clearly details Elvis’ shortcomings and his eccentric behavior, as told by bodyguards Red West, Sonny West, and Dave Hebler. During the one week it took to finish the book, I found the text easy to read but sometimes the storyline was difficult to keep track of. The 22 chapters constantly flip-flop between Elvis’ teenage and his adulthood years while playing in Vegas. In other words if your in reading about what happened in 1966, you would have to go back in the book to read about 1972, and so on. Again, it’s completely out of sequence, which makes the storyline difficult to follow. But the overall sensationalism keeps your interest, while wondering what the hell Elvis is going to do next! Somewhere in the text the authors agreed that during the Graceland years (1957-1960)were probably Elvis’ best. I think the authors should have devoted more chapters to that time period, and not so much of Elvis’ time spent in Vegas, which was filled with turmoil. The Epilogue and final chapter is a transcript of a recorded phone conversation between Elvis and Red West several months after the firings. Definitely read and analyze that chapter. I think it offers a compelling insight into what the authors were thinking and feeling when they collaborated this book, and it answers a lot of questions. Elvis – What Happened?, was clearly written to hurt Elvis, his family, and his fans. The authors’ styles of reminiscing about the “good-ole-days” are direct, crude and simple. They’ve included it all; the drugs, the sex, the fights, the joys, and pains that came with sensational fame and fortune. However, in spite of all they shared together, their personas were extremely revengeful, and in the end, they offered him no mercy. This book clearly proves it. I recommend this particular book but I would not purchase any other books concerning Elvis, which was written by the same authors.Read full review

I have just started reading this book. Reading it is a bit difficult due to small print but I do think it may be difficult because of the story line. At this point I have not made a decision regarding recommendations.

To begin, I am still an Elvis fan. This book tells more about Elvis then I really wanted to know (but of course I kept reading it). As most all performers they had issues. The three that wrote this book tells everything! And as I read in other reviews, as said, the authors jumped back and forth, you will be reading about the later years of Elvis and all of a sudden you are back to when he first started out. I have read another book by Jerry S. he never went into such details as these three did. Sounds like Elvis was a spoiled brat who never grew up! Sorry Elvis.. God rest your soul.
To me, this was an in-your-face unauthorized biography. It tells the story of the "King" up close and personal. Yes, it is harsh. And, yes, it is believable. It shows that Elvis was a human just like me and you. He made mistakes and paid dearly for them. Addicted to drugs? This book convinced me that he was. A workaholic? I believe that, too. It also shows his affection for his daughter, Lisa Marie. Did he spoil her unmercifully? He was the "King" so why shouldn't he? This book shows the inside life of the greatest performer of all time. I feel sure he wouldn't want the world to know him this intimately but that's the price of fame. Everyone wants to know the real Elvis and this book will show you just that.
