My first 3170, I used for about 15 years, and many thousands of scans until it just stopped working. The templates for negative & slide scans were handy during the years I shot freelance pro photography using film,to convert film files into digital format. That was quite the "Learning curve" in 2002!. The driver download is still available for up to Windows 8 (not sure on 10--haven't checked w/Epson). The software and screens are easy to navigate and provide a generous variety of options for your scans. I was happy with this product during the years I used it, so I bought another one. I acquired this unit (used) recently which came without the templates--but that was ok as I still had mine, as well as the power cord and USB connection cord. The unit works fine with Windows 8 that I am running now.Read full review

I bought this for scanning 40 years worth of slides, some professional, some personal. It does an excellent job on the slides. Not fast, but very good color and detail resolutions, including options for color restoration of older slides and backlight correction. I only tried one document scan and it was pretty slow compared to my HP printer/scanner, which is a much newer model. I would highly recommend it for scanning slides.

Item arrived with damaged pulley and belt. I was able to repair this. Seller gave partial refund. Good person to deal with. Scanner now works like new. Accurate color and fast scan to computer and printer. I bought this to replace my unit which was the exact same model. Just had to plug in the cables , since it was the same unit I did not have to reinstall software. Working great at this time. Scans a bit slower than today's models but I wanted this to mate with an older computer running windows XP. My original scanner was damaged when orange juice was accidentally spilled on it. So far very happy with the purchase.

Epson has continued with great support on this professional grade scanner. Everything up to Win 7 32/64 bit has driver downloads at Epson from Win98 to Win 7, Mac, and there is even links to Linux 4 versions of Perfection 3170 drivers by Epson, although they say they do not support. For those who say this scanner is slow, this scanner has a real optical resolution (not interpolated) of 3200x6400. That's about the highest resolution offered to consumers. Scans at the proper resolutions are fast, scans at the same resolution compared to other scanners is fast (although you'll have a hard time finding comparable models in other brands). The high resolution is helpful for film/negative scans, and microscopic inspection. It's not practical for normal scans. The white cold cathode and MatrixCCD provide superior clarity and color at the cost of some additional power. You will not get the same quality out of a USB powered scanner - in fact, check the specs, 23W of 110V power should tell you something. Great scanner, and now they can be found second hand for really cheap.Read full review
