Evelina was a breakthrough novel for female writers--which there hadn't been many of up to the time. Furthermore, it's not simply a novel that's famous because of it's author's circumstances--it's very well and tightly written, employing the sometimes difficult format of correspondence between characters instead of straight dialogue. It's an enjoyable type of gothic (romance) novel, if somewhat overblown at times. Evelina is also referenced in other early novels, such as Little Women by L. M. Alcott, etc.
