I spent 18 months in Berlin from 1963 to 1965 (just after the wall was in place) while in the U.S. Army. Looking back on that period with some fellow soldiers that had spent time there also, this movie was recommended. Anytime one lives through such a period of history, actually being there as history was made leaves an indelible mark in your memory. Seeing Berlin as it was when I was there brings back many memorys of that time. Last year I visited my old base in Berlin which is now in the process of being converted to high-end condominiums. Who would think that our old barracks (where I lived for free.....) would now be worth $700,000 for a single apartment? Seeing East Berlin as a free city was quite an experience - in fact, the hotel where we stayed is in what was formerly East Berlin. Berlin is a beautiful city, filled with history (as is the rest of Europe) and has recovered from nearly total destruction to be what it is today. This review is more about me and my experiences which makes the movie mean much more to me than to someone who did not live in that time and place.Read full review
In my opinion "Funeral in Berlin" is Michael Caine's best spy movie. However for background you should see the first film in the Harry Palmer series "The Ipcress File" which is also excellent. You can take or leave "Billion Dollar Brain" which attempted to be a 007 copy and fell short.

Great movie adaptation from the book by Len Deighton. Michael Caine is wonderful as Harry Palmer – a reluctant spy avoiding military prison. This is the character first established in the Ipcress File. Seeing Berlin – both East and West – in the 1960s is a treat. The twists of the plot are initially difficult to follow – you probably will want to watch it at least twice. Very worthwhile!

While not a total masterpiece like its predecessor 'The Ipcress File,' 'Funeral in Berlin' remains a top-notch Cold War spy thriller with another outstanding performance by Michael Caine as working class spy with high class tastes Harry Palmer.

I was in the US Army in Berlin Brigade 1964 - 1966. Good use of locations and not too far off from the kind of events that went on in the 60s.
