Factotum - noun - a jack of all trades. Charles Bukowski may well have been a 'jack of all trades' but he was a master of one: 'writing'. Well, two ... 'Factotum' (the film) expertly tracks the troubled life of Bukowski's, alter-ego Henry Chinaski as he is employed in various uninspiring jobs (while drinking), has casual sex (while drinking), and generally annoying people (while drinking). In fact, it could be said that the only consistent thing in the world of Bukowski-Chinaski is drinking. But he can also write, when the mood takes him. Luckily, this is quite often. Based on more than one of Bukowski's novels - including 'Factotum' and 'The Post Office' - the film stars veteran actor Matt Dillon as the drinker-writer who aspires to one day make a living from his craft. Lili Taylor and Marisa Tomei play two of Chinaski's more prominent lovers, those he uses whether in-or-out-of employment. Often he is fired. Through sheer hard work - and a lot of pain - he eventually attains his wish. Chinaski is not painted as being a nice person in 'Factotum' and ordinarily we would not have any nice feeling for such a person but with Chinaski-Bukowski - and Matt Dillon, who does a stand-out job of the character - we can't help but like him. Charm. Humor. Whatever trait it is that breaks through the bad elements of one's character, Bukowski had it. Burroughs didn't. This film takes a new look at the Bukowski character. It is different from - and should not be compared to - the Mickey Rourke performance in 'Barfly'. Both performances are accurate. 'Factotum' is nevertheless historically and factually more accurate.
