Additional information
Just in case the THIS IS SPINAL TAP cover photo isn't a major clue, suffice to say this Spencer Davis Group is not the fresh-faced, sharp-dressed group of Midlands kids who scored in the mid '60s with classic British R&B singles like "Gimme Some Lovin'." FUNKY was recorded in 1969 for the US label Date Records and was ready for shipment when someone noticed that the Spencer Davis Group had never signed their Date contracts and were still under contract to another label! Some copies eventually slipped into the remainder racks in the early '70s, but for all intents, FUNKY was never actually released. This version, padded with nearly an extra album's worth of radio sessions, shows that by 1969, keyboardist Davis and his post-Stevie Winwood group were going into the same jazz-fusion arena as Winwood's Traffic, with some echoes of early Chicago and even the Beach Boys! Surprisingly good, overall.
