Great size, fits well on the dash, very good graphics and mapping. I replaced at Garmin 750 which was flaky, often took me on odd routes and couldn't find a simple address in Denver. Great tool, only wish it would interface with backup camera.

The Garmin nuvi 850 is my first experience with a GPS. It has had its pluses and its minuses. The pluses are that it 98% of the time gets me to where I need to go and it was fairly inexpensive. Garmin's female voice is pleasant enough though it does once in a while have a strange pronunciation. For example, Nall Road is pronounced Null and Kenneth Rd. is pronounced Ku-neth Rd. Any boulevards are pronounced Bully-vard. These are more amusing that detremintal. The minuses are: 1) the speech recognition system is basically useless for deliveries that are highly time dependent as is the case in my job. Garmin only allows you to say each digit and alpha character one at a time instead of recognizing whole words. And even more irritating is that wants confirmation after every character. It's way faster to just enter the address via the touch screen. I was highly disappointed. 2) The screen is hard to see in shadowy daylight as the unit doesn't detect the light as dark enough to turn on the backlight. I haven't tried just turning on the night display background for full time use yet and that may solve the problem. But Auto mode doesn't work real well in the early and late parts of a day. 3) The touch screen will beep indicating it recognize you touched a character or menu item but soemtimes beeps but doesn't register what you touched. This is frustrating. Sometimes I have had to touch a character or menu item 3 or 4 times before it finally registers on the screen. 4) I bought a mount for the unit but there doesn't appear to be anyway to mount the unit without the cradle piece that gives one a place to connect the mount to the unit. Since I bought a used unit that came with nothing but the charger and the unit and the cradle mount didn't come with the cradle connector I am out of luck. With the problem with character touch registration that's just as well anyway. 5) The battery doesn't hold a charge very long. I don't know if a new battery would solve that problem and the one I have is just tired from use. 6) This unit does not come with lifetime map support. That hasn't been a problem for me but might be for you. If you need lifetime map support don't bother with this unit as map updates are around $70 each. 7) The FM radio connection to play Garmin's voice throught your car stereo doesn't work well. I have never had good luck with ANY device that is FM connection capable so this is not unique to Garmin. If you buy a used version of one of these try to get one that has all the accessories (except the speech recognition remote isn't necessary since the feature doesn't work well and isn't cheap). If you just buy the unit without any accessories I would recommend the charger and a new battery. If you want to mount the unit it can be done for $35-45. A new battery is $20-25. The bag isn't real necessary.Read full review

I actually really like this GPS but there are a couple of small issues that are bugging me with it. It seems to freeze every now and then when you are using it. It will fix itself most of the time but you do have to turn it on and off once in a while. For basic use it is great but if you need to use it continuously it has these little quirks!!!! I love the voice control although if you need to put in a address you have to type that part in but you can navigate through it with ease otherwise! Well worth the $179 I paid for it, if I had paid over $500 like the retail price is I would have taken it back!
I was a little hesistant about buying this product because of the big price drop, some bad reviews I read and because it is refurbished but I am just really pleased with this product. First of all, it looks like it is brand new, no marks anywhere on it and there is no way of telling it isn,t new except for the box it came in. It is easy to operate. Very user friendly, has a manual with it (not a place to download a manual but an actual manual) and features like games, audio player, dual speakers, headphone jacks, 3 ways to charge the battery, an easily removeable battery and different voices with different personalities, FM transmitter to play audio on the radio, photo storage display and best of all, a GPS that comes up quickly and accurately with a neat display. Also the speech recognition works and I have no problems as of yet. The bad things are: The remote has a short strap and is a little difficult to install. The manual is nice but doesn't get into some of the details such as how to load music & pictures into the unit but it does tell you who to call. A lot of the extras it has are nice but I would have preferred if instead of the games there was a way to geo cache with it. I bought this because it has the dual speakers, a battery you can easily replace, charge and have an extra around. Also the wider screen is easy to see and the speech recognition is very useful so I can keep my eyes on the road more.Read full review
I purchased this unit because I was about to go on a month long road trip up the east coast. I was interested in the feature that lets you talk to the unit instead of typing in the info. That feature turned out to be useless if you have the radio on at all. It can not cancel out the background noise to hear what you are speaking. After I bought the unit I found out that I had to spend another 69.99 for updated maps that should have been included in the package. Even with the updated maps, half of the time the unit could not even find the address I put in, and 90% of the time it took me the most rediculous routes. I was driving to ocean city MD, and instead of staying on 50 which goes straight there, it tried to direct me down a one lane road that was backed up for miles. Needless to say I took 50. So many times this thing had me confused at why it was directing me the way it was. This is my second attempt with Garmin, and I think my last. I would highly recommend staying away from this garbage.Read full review
