From an artistic and storytelling standpoint this is an interesting movie, but by no means perfect. The lighting is deliberately made more contrasty than the old black and white movies, the story is more focused on storytelling instead of showing you the story, so the beginning "spoken intro" is more important to understanding it, the long sections of dialogues are vital to understanding what is going on, and while the English subtitles are excellent, the story is better in French than in English. Short version of the story-- a girl leaves home early, screws up her life, decides to commit suicide, meets an older man on the bridge, he saves her life, they go through time together working as a knife throwing act, they part when she "falls in love with someone" and she finally realizes that she was really in love with the older guy and having knives thrown at her was her career choice, too. Okay, it might not make a lot of sense, it is interesting, and well put together in all aspects, much like a mix of modern techniques with the "no skin" older parameters of the movie world of the 1950's. If you don't speak French you may have to watch it two or three times to connect all the dots, but it actually does make about as much sense as any of hte modern movies make. .Read full review
This is a classic tale, told on b/w film, in the noir style. It has the feel of burlesque, with unrequited romance between an again knife performer and his young muse, who he meets when both want to jump off the same bridge and end it all. I don't want to give too much away, but it's worth watching. It is pure French Noir for those who love French films. I thoroughly enjoyed it. **If you found this information at all helpful, please take a moment to select the "yes" button below. I just like how the film seems to invoke a throwback to 1930s-1940s slapstick romantic comedies--way before the time when romantic comedies didn't have the sort of dubious distinction, connotation that it does today! The casting of (pop star) Vanessa Paradis and (veteran actor) Daniel Auteuil is outstanding--as well as the backdrop locales!
i really enjoyed this film as i was unable to purchase it in my town. i received the film quickly and have watched it several times . good experience.
