upsides are - reliable, - easy to clean, - easy to maintain: a community of passionate bloggers on how to get best coffee and look after your machine - makes great, cafe-quality coffee - high pressure group head which is important for a good espresso downsides are - can't fit a mug under the filter basket, unless you remove the drip tray. - a little light, I'm looking to drill it to a heavy base or the bench so it doesn't shift while I screw the basket in. - milk wand points straight down and too close to my benchtop, hard to get the jug under with the long plastic frother attachment. also the attachment makes big bubbles in jug until it overflows before milk is hot. So i removed it, works much better without it. I can see why this is a classic. If you're a budding barista and you're into making not just good coffee but great coffee, then this machine will make that possible.Read full review

Great coffee machine for the price, especially if you are willing to buy a used one and restore it. The machine is easy to restore due to the simplicity of the internals and you have heaps of online guides to help you out if you get stuck. Spare parts are also readily available online. The panarello frother wand is of bad quality so its recommended you change to the Silvia wand if you like your lattes. I got mine for $86 AUS and took it home, gave it a good descale, cleaned the internals by taking it apart boiler, steam valve etc, this was not hard to do, even for a first timer like me. I changed all the gaskets and O'rings, changed the steam arm to the Silvua one. Got myself some freshly roasted coffee beans from my local roaster. My Mrs agrees that my coffee is better than any other cafe in the local area, trust me, she's not the type to sugarcoat things to make me feel better!Read full review
The Gaggia Classic is the perfect machine for people wanting the cafe experience at home, without breaking the bank. It also maintains the manual feel of packing the coffee yourself, as opposed to the automatic machines, which can take the fun out of the art. Of the cheapish machines, gaggia is my personal pick, particularly over a sunbeam or breville. You won't be disappointed.
excellent machine, makes great coffee with minimal effort

There are already a gazillion reviews available on this model of espresso machine and nearly all are favourable. I can only reiterate what most of them say. This is a sturdy, very well built machine that produces a great cup of espresso. It takes a little getting used to but will reward your efforts. As with all espresso machines, you need to get all factors right and you need a good grinder as well. Two modifications I would rate as essential are 1.) Get rid of the pressurised basket and 2.) Reduce the pressure of the OPV. The basket cost me $nz10.00 and the reduction of the pressure took five minutes with a Phillips head screwdriver, a 17mm socket and a 3/16 hex key. Great machine at a very good price.
