I was looking for a real value for money GPS Golf watch and was able to see the Garmin S1 in action with a fellow player. It was accurate, didn't require parting with extra money for updates, simple to use, lightweight and had large numbers that were easy to see. This has good basic features & is a great introduction for using a GPS guide for golf & walking. Next step is having hole layout schematics, but these added features,I believe, are too expensive at present. I hope the integrated watch band lasts as I can't see replacing it would be easy or cheap.
I previously had a Golf Caddy device which required you to download up to 20 courses as required. The Garmin S1 Approach appealed to me because downloads are not required, virtually every course is already on the watch ready to use; even comparatively small and 'out of the way' courses. It is very easy to use and very accurate immediately telling you the course you are at, the tee you are standing on, the par rating of the hole and the distance to the center of the green. It progressively changes as you move around the course with very little input required from the golfer. (Occasionally you may need to advance the hole number as you move to the next tee). The watch time is also great because of its GPS absolute accuracy at all times. The only criticism I have is that I usually wear my watch 100% of the time; during showers, everything. This created a problem because the watch band over time (about 18 months), which cannot be replaced as it is a molded part of the watch, became worn, brittle and broken in several places, rendering it useless. The watch is fantastic but DON'T WEAR IT ALL THE TIME!!! I've since bought another S1 watch but will wear it according to my previous experience.Read full review
