In the rock & roll era, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup was best known as the man whose song "That's All Right" helped launch Elvis Presley's career--as "That's Alright (Mama)"--in 1954, by which time Crudup was already a veteran bluesman. The collection GONNA BE SOME CHANGES chronicles Crudup's initial recording career, from his first sides for RCA in the mid-'40s to his mid-'50s releases. A good cross-section of Crudup's catalog is offered here, from his most popular tunes (naturally including the abovementioned milestone) to lesser-known cuts, and, in retrospect, it's easy to hear how his rollicking, post-Robert Johnson Delta blues sound prefigured rock & roll. A booklet bursting with information adds even further to the historical aspect of this impressive anthology.
