I am not talking about a fish here. Hemingway seldom lost a fish. I am talking about the once in a lifetime woman a man can meet but is too foolish to realize it. Hemingway ended up with nothing but his children but lost the love of his life whom he abandoned for no real reason except his blind pursuit of money, when it came down to it. He convinced himself he was in love with a rich girl named Pauline who deliberately and cunningly broke up Hemingway's new marriage to Hadley on purpose, The triumphant Pauline then put Ernest on display for her friends and family in Arkansas. Too late, Hemingway realized he was not in love with Pauline right after he divorced Hadley, who was The One and only woman he would ever truly love. He loved every atom of Hadley and spent the rest of his wretched life trying to win her back, even while she was remarried shortly after they divorced with hadley in tears and heartbroken. She also knew in her bones Ernest was her One. Hemingway used the ridiculous rationalization that he was in love with Hadley AND Pauline at the same time. How convenient for him to form his own personal harem in his mind ! He didn't follow his heart, he followed his ambition. He had a chance meeting with Hadley a few years after they divorced and both were remarried. You have to read this book to understand the utter sadness of the scene as Hadley disappeared into a crowd on the street after they had a drink together. Even the lst time they talked, Hemingway begged Hadley to give him another chance so they could remarry. He never saw Hadley again after their last drink together. Hemingway later did marry a woman named Mary who was a comfort to him in his older age but he was haunted by his memories of Hadley to his grave. The premise to the book was that Hemingway had a near death experience and told the story to the author, A.E. Hotchner with the intent of NEVER having the story of Hadley be lost with his death. Hotch carried the story around with him for forty years after the time Ernest died until his last wife, Mary, also died. Hotchner delayed the true story so as not to hurt Mary's feelings. The Hemingway novel, A Moveable Feast, describes the love he had for Hadley and their lives together, thinly veiled as fiction. I have such a personal reaction to this book because Hemingway's story is also my own life story. I am 67 years old and my life without my One whom I lost by my own stupidity is but a poor thing compared to what it could be if she were still with me. But, I console myself with the fact I do not regret one second I spent with her. I believe we were already married in another lifetime since there is no other way to explain how we knew each other's souls in a flash 5 minutes after we first met ! I had been married 31 years before my wife died and even she did not know me as deeply as my One did in five minutes after we met. So, no regrets, just utter sadness and desolation which could only be surpassed by never having met my One. Some people live their entire lives and never find their One, but it hurts more as we age. I do believe what we have is immortal since feelings like that between two people can never die with our bodies. But, I digress... Buy this book if you are a romantic person who believes in the finding the One theory of love.I am glad I found this book. It does bring out feelings that are very precious and will not die with me. I too have written a book of poetry about my experiences.Read full review
