A 10-person instrumental collective, mixing house beats with rocked-up, psyched-up instrumental interplay, Rinocerose is further proof that the French pop music revival isn't all Parisian lounge-techno and sweetened retro soundscapes. INSTALLATION SONORE, the Montpellier-based group's debut, veers between a variety of club-ready grooves and an iconoclastic approach to modern music making. Rinocerose's general approach is to lay down the house beats and let the guitars power chord freely. At its most freewheeling, as on the stomping Daft Punk-like opener "La Guitaristic House Organisation," this is music for party people who love to get down. However the band can be just as inclined to introspection, as on the self-descriptive "323 Secondes de Musique Repetitive avec Guitarre Espagnole." The difference between Rinocerose and most of its beat-happy counterparts is made clear on "Popular Mechanics," a slowly unfolding Spiritualized-like anthem featuring four guitars snaking under skittering hi-hats and echoed Brazilian chants.
