When Jan & Dean hit pay dirt and the public eye in 1963 with the ubiquitous summer hit "Surf City," they had already been active on the L.A. recording scene for at least five years, first as Jan & Arnie, and then, when Arnie Ginsburg left the duo and was replaced by Dean Torrence, as Jan & Dean, tracking doo wop-styled singles for the Arwin, Dore, and Challenge labels before signing with Liberty Records. This set, which has been released several times over the years under different titles by different imprints, collects some of these early tracks from four different labels, and while it definitely isn't surf, it's clear that Brian Wilson wasn't the only one thinking about taking doo wop vocal harmonies to new places during this time. Of particular interest here is the fascinatingly odd version of "Tennessee," which just may be the best doo wop California hillbilly trash country two-step recording ever made. ~ Steve Leggett
