This book truly transports you back, to a time when life seemed a lot simpler and happier, in Harry's early years. A time he reflects back on with such warmth and clarity. Be it that it was over a century ago he is speaking about. But then it take you on a journey through what could only be described as hell, for anyone to go through. But even in that time, Harry remembers some bright lights. Is camaraderie with his fellow Tommy, the letters and good parcels from home. But none of this can outway the pain he must of felt recounting the deaths of his childhood friends, new found regimental mates, cousins, uncles, brothers. For one war to strip so much from one person, who is still having to fight in the hell that took those lives, shows what character the man had. The book is rollercoaster of emotions and memories, coming from a man who seems to have lived so many lives in one. Not only has he had to live with those memories of war for nearly 90 years, living to the age he has, had seen him have to endure more pain in later life. He has outlived everyone he had ever known, from childhood, to work, to his own immediate family, including his own wife and children. This book, in my opinion is a must read. If we could have a world full of Harry patches it would be a far better one. RIP a true hero and a gentleman.Read full review
