if you are a prince fan, you need to own this book. that's as simply as i can put it. it's the most in-depth, holistic relation of the *extraordinary* story of a hot young minneapolis musician conquering first pop charts, then movie screens, and in short order, the world. light begins by setting the scene w/a quite very compelling and insightful review of prince's life and career UP TO 1983, to give context to the story to come. this is necessary to understand the magnitude of the impact prince and his peers (springsteen, madonna, michael jackson, etc) in the 1980s. built from both previous and copious new original research and interviews, you really won't find a better overview of prince's impact. though i sometimes disagree w/light's opinions, he is always very democratic and gives the reader the facts to come to their own conclusions. the holistic view of the pop landscape and of prince's entire career makes this THE book to read about the impact that purple rain had, whether you are too young to have experienced it first hand, or to give context and perspective to those who do remember those heady times. can't recommend it highly enough, i tore through it in two days.Read full review
