We had just returned from an 8 day package tour to Beijing and the Shanghai region, and wanted to research future travel to Xian and a Yangze River Cruise to Chonquing. The Guide provided the information we need, allowing us to evaluate better all the information we researched on the internet. The Guide also provides excellent coverage of present day travel options in China. I bought the very first edition of the Lonely Planet Guide to China in 1985, which finally made it feasible to travel there independently, spending 3 months in China, finding the guide invaluable. The latest edition certainly highlights the changes in China since then, and the far broader range of available areas to visit. The only thing I miss in present day Lonely Planet guides compared to the earliest editions is the willingness to be more frank about drawbacks - places not worth visiting - difficulties etc.Read full review
