This is the story of one man's life. Spanning eighty years and half the globe, the author's story takes us from India under the Raj to the war in Europe and beyond, through many entralling adventures. The author was only five years old when his father died. His mother made heroic efforts to support them, but her son's ill health forced a return from India to Britain in 1929. Growing up in England in the 1930s gave rise to a pivotal event in his life; joining the Sea Scouts, which awakened a desire to go to sea. This ambition was realised at the outbreak of war when he first served in the River Emergency Service and then joined the Royal Navy. His wartime adventures were many and varied, involving minesweeping, convoy escort, and serving on landing craft; during this latter period, he saw service at the Sicilian and Italian landings, and on D-Day. The end of the war brought a new posting to India, the land of his birth, where he worked for a time as a tea planter. A later move to Australia saw a new life as a farmer, a whaler, and a Protector of Natives , which involved working for the welfare of Aborigines. In this latter capacity, he played an unexpected and dramatic part in safeguarding the Aboriginal population during the infamous Blue Streak missile tests. The remarkable story of a remarkable man, 'Memoirs of a Minor Transgressor' is an utterly absorbing read which fulfils the proper purpose of autobiography, which is to illuminate not just the life but the times.
