I remember watching this movie religiously as a kid. My mom had recorded it off the tv when it first came out and I must have played it into the ground. :) Since it was done so long ago, the film iteslf has no eye-popping special effects. But the effects it does have are okay and add to the movie's splendor. The actors are awesome and the musical score is enchanting. I wish I had the soundtrack. The story is about a young boy named Mio who travels to a place far beyond the stars named The Land of Faraway, where he finds his long-lost father who is the king of that mystical land. He learns that an evil knight named Kato has been snatching children and turning them into birds, doomed to circle his dark castle for all eternity. Mio takes it upon himself to stop Kato's evil doings and travels to his castle with his new best friend, Jum-Jum (pronounced Yum-Yum), and his beautiful white horse, Miramis (I can't recall if that's the correct spelling). I just bought a used copy of the Anchor Bay USA version here on ebay for $45. I found that quite reasonable, considering used copies of that version run for about $160 on Amazon.com. =/ TOO expensive for my taste. It's a very rare dvd. You CAN find less-expensive versions from other countries; you just need a dvd player that plays all region formats. If you know where to shop, you can buy one cheap. I bought one, myself, today for only $43. :) If you enjoy the fantasy genre, then I recommend checking this film out. It's hard to find the US dvd version at a good price, but like I stated above, if you have the right dvd player, you can purchase this title from other countries at a decent price. Although, if you own a VHS player, you can get this movie in that format for a very good price. Always remember to check the seller's description for the condition and region coding.Read full review
Very fanciful and strange, but in the best ways! I absolutely loved this movie as a child, and nothing has changed. Christopher Lee is great, but he's pretty great in everything he's in.
