I love everything by Gregory Maguire but his Oz books are my favorite. A Lion Among Men gives the “true” background story of why the cowardly lion became a coward. I won’t spoil the story but would say he had a very hard life and was no cub by the time he met Dorothy.

Gregory Maguire, the author of Wicked, Son of a Witch and now A Lion Among Men has successfully completed volume three in the Wicked Years and oh what a volume it is! It's fantastic! We have all wondered why the cowardly lion was so cowardly. We find out the reason why and much much more about Elphaba(the Wicked Witch of the West)her possible son Liir, the munchkins, the mysterious Yackle, the Woo (Wizard of Oz) and other central characters. This volume appears to really go nowhere and we wonder what it has to do with the big picture- Will the Grimmerie fall into the wrong hands and where is it, will Liir, Candle and the child resurface, will The Wicked Witch of the West return? BUT, when you dig deeper and read between the lines we find important clues. When the Cowardly Lion aka Brrr asks Yackle about how she became involved with the witches (east and west) she replies, "Has she come back?" and then "Is she here?" page 82. Only the future will tell but that foreshadows it quite well... So beware- the future looks bright for this popular redux of the famous oz series. And we can't wait for more! I suspect Jack Pumpkinhead will appear again- he was in this book- you just have to look closely- Mombi, from Baum's first sequel (of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), The Marvelous Land of Oz will be around(again perhaps hehe) and the Glass cat will be back to cause more trouble. And of course we can't wait until,The Scarecrow (hopefully the real one and not the imposter), The Tinman and Dorothy and the Wizard return. And Toto too!Read full review

I like the re-telling of the original series and it's definitely easier to read (on a scale of boring to tolerable). I do, however, enjoy how Maguire skirts around sexual encounters in any of his books. His endings are always a bit unsavory and never seem very resolute, not that you need resolution or an absolute ending to a book for it to be good, but something about them always leaves you wanting. My guess is that he's just encouraging fan fiction.
I have read the othe 2 books of this series, Wicked and Son of a Witch, and this book follows the other 2 excellently. When I read Wicked I always wondered what happened to the baby lion cub introduced to Elphaba while she was in school. This book answers all the questions I had and readers find out why the lion is so cowardly. I'm ready to learn more about the scarecrow and tin man.
