For fans of Rendell's often harrowing psychological thrillers like "Live Flesh" or "The Bridesmaid," let me start by saying she takes a somewhat lighter touch in this novel. Dashes of delightfully low-key humor pepper this book, and I found myself laughing out loud occasionally. However, the underlying subject matter is as disturbing as we have come to expect from this great writer. The characterizations are superb. You may be driven to distraction by one of the main characters' seemingly endless handwashings and baths, but this person suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (and, as it turns out, other mental problems as well) and so we experience what she experiences. We are introduced to quite a number of people as the plot thickens and the connections between them become clearer. All but two won my sympathy, and I'll let you decide which you identify with the most. But even the two I felt were "villains" were expertly drawn by Rendell. Enjoy!Read full review
