Value. That's what I needed. It was time to move up from my Epson 1280 to give me the capability to print 24x30 as I did in my darkroom. I didn't see the value in the Epson 7600 et al, not only from the initial cost standpoint, but also from the ink cost too. This is a BIG device, is not quiet when turned on, but prints a 20x24 in about 12 minutes or so at highest quality and produces the most true to life colors I've ever seen. After calibrating my monitor, and calibrating the printer per the HP instructions, then finding an online free profile for the HP papers I use, this thing produces exactly the same colors and densities I see on my monitor. I never have to make a second print. And as far as ink usage goes, this printer seems to have quit using ink! I'm still on my first set of cartridges and I've nearly used up an entire roll of 24" wide premium glossy. The cartridges are not cheap, and if you don't care about longevity or precision color there are generic ones out there, but the ink lasts so long that I'm willing to blow the bucks to buy the HP inks. I'm printing high res scans of 4x5 sheet film and the sharpness this printer gives exceeds my very best darkroom efforts. And with just a little help in PhotoShop my Canon Powershot Pro 1 gives me enough file size to make 20x24's that are at least as sharp as my medium format scans. Unbelievable! I have seen my images printed on the Epson large printers, and to my eye, and to many others' as well, this printer uses the dye based inks to produce archival prints that are far better and more pleasing than the Epsons. No bronzing at all. But I think it's important to use the HP inks and papers to get the full advantage of this printer. I bought this on ebay early in 2007, and wish I had done it years earlier.Read full review
I purchased this printer to replace an Epson 3800 that the print heads had dried on. There are a number of reasons for purchasing this printer - it is 24 inch roll, auto cut,and I purchased it for about a third of the price of a new printer from HP Direct. I print a lot of panoramic landscape photos and the 24 inch format allows printing of photos as long as a roll of paper (100 feet), the ink drying in the print head problem is gone due to the printer having a replaceable head that cost $39.00 to buy (unlike the Epson at $1,000.00). The only thing about the printer is the size. It takes the printer stand where the Epson 3800 and the Phaser 6120 used to reside. A small inconvenience! This is a 6 color rather than a 9 color printer (4 blacks) so the printer can not do grey scale like the Epson. The print is as good as the Epson 3800 using dye inks rather than Epson's pigment inks. There is a CISS available for this printer that works (unlike the cartridge system available for the Epson). The range of papers compatible with the printer is much wider due to using dye inks.Read full review
This printer is an upgrade for me from the Designjet 120NR. Mine failed and repair cost more than buying the 130 on Ebay. The 130 uses archival permanent inks and has 2400dpi resolution, the 120 does not use archival inks, in addition, parts from the 120 can be used to upgrade the 130 to the NR (network and roll feed/cutter). I like the reliability of the 130 and the availability of permanent inks and parts, the 120 was discontinued by HP and it was hard getting print heads and ink cartridges. I bought this machine because of the price and consumables availability. The printer works fantastic and should give years of trouble free operation.
HP seems to make some of the finest photo quality printers today. The 24 inch carriage on this one allows poster size prints to be made, with absolutely stunning color quality. It's even fast considering the size of the print. Previously owned Epson 13 inch printer and had a difficult time with the color consistently. Very pleased to own this HP...
Printer works well. Its is abit slow when printing A3 format in best quality with color (aprox. 10min per page). If time is not an option, I would recommend this product to someone who need a large printer for work.
