Mit dem Werk wird ein neues, mikroskopisch-lokalistisch orientiertes Paradigma in Pathologie und allgemeiner Medizin eingeleitet, das bis heute - wenngleich erweitert - die medizinische Forschung, Diagnostik und Therapie bestimmt. Virchows Gegenspieler Gustav Adolph Spiess publizierte im Anschluss die Polemik Die Cellular-Pathologie im Gegensatz zur Humoral- und Solidarpathologie .
