This book illustrates the paradoxical power of social capital in creating and resolving conflict. Social capital is one of the most widespread topics in contemporary political, economic and sociological literature. Furthermore, recent forays of social capital into peace studies suggests a growing interest in exploring the roles of trust and associational membership in violence and in conflict resolution. Comprising both case-studies and theoretical essays, this new volume is divided into three sections. The first investigates the role of social capital in inciting and/or furthering violence; the second explores the contributions of social capital to peacebuilding; and the third explores the complexity and ambiguities of the roles social capital may play in peace and conflict. The book will contribute to the literature by investigating some key issues, such as: To what extent is social capital related to peace and conflict? What forms does social capital take in these associations, and how can the relationships be explained? This book will be of much interest to students of peace and conflict studies, security studies, sociology and International Relations.
