Audio Remasterer: Tommy Cavalieri. Liner Note Author: Nicola Conte . Illustrator: Giuseppe Palumbo. Bossa nova aficionado and Italian jazz great Nicola Conte returns a third time to vintage Brazilian popular music on the latest volume in the Viagem series. These 18 tracks were compiled after listening to hundreds of recordings from the Blue Note, Universal, and Schema labels; all cuts were released between 1963 and 1970. This set reaches deeper into bossa and samba than either of the two previous volumes. While the sounds reflect the height of Brazil's cosmopolitan fusion of its native bossa and jazz , many of the tracks here also reflect the deep earthiness of the country's various folk traditions. Stellar examples of this are Eliana Pittman's experimental "Batacuda Negro," Claudia's fingerpopping "Macumba," and Marcio Diniz's hard-swinging groover "Mulata Dengosa." The harmonic sophistication in all the music here also reflects the influences of hard bop, West Coast, and progressive jazz coming from Northern Europe and the U.S. Check Carlos Sodré's "Samba de Negro" for the colorful interplay between an ambitious brass chart and the textured layers of polyrhythms. Viagem, Vol. 3 is Afro-Brazilian music at its very best. ~ Thom Jurek
