Excellent adventure/thriller set as the British Empire in India was beginning to lose it"s influence and power. Excellent cast of stars headed by Kenneth More and Herbert Lom on opposite sides. Veteran actor Wilfrid Hyde White and Ava Gardner also gave brilliant performances but special praise should be given to the Indian actor who played the Engine driver. Classic performances all around and a lot of stiff upper lip English jingoisn of times gone by.

Perhaps today a little politically incorrect - but who really cares. It is a great action film of its period which is well acted by an excellent cast and very enjoyable. Just the thing to watch on a Sunday afternoon wearing ones solar topee, khaki shorts and waving the Union Jack whilst sipping a chota peg or two.

I would like to have given this film five stars, but thought I had to take into consideration that it is a little dated and, therefore, might not appeal as much to others. We showed it at our British Raj themed New Year's Eve party and it went down a treat. Even my 19 year-old son, who isn't a big fan of older films, really enjoyed it. I particularly liked that there aren't really good guys and bad guys. In between the action sequences, there are lots of issues raised about politics, religion, snobbery and soldiering. These are just presented and neither condoned nor condemned. A very good introduction for a discussion of many issues presently affecting the world (as they have for centuries). On a final note, I actually appreciated that the men had sweat stains on their clothes; hard to avoid in 1905 India.Read full review
EXCELLENT WELL MADE FILM OF THE KIND YOU DO NOT SEE ANYMORE. SET IN INDIA AND THE BRITISH EMPIRE OF 1905 , BEFORE WORLD WAR ONE. VERY WELL TOLD AND A GREAT CAST OF ACTORS. VERY WELL EXPLORED THEMES OF REASONS FOR CONFLICTS , SEPARATE RELIGIONS , RANKS OF BRITISH AND INDIAN SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS OF DIFFERENT RELIGIONS AND CLASS AND COUNTRIES. THE SCENERY IS MAGNIFICENT, ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS VERY WELL DONE AND STUNTWORK IS IMPRESSIVE. LAUREN BACALL IS THE LEADING LADY AND KENNETH MORE IS GREAT AS THE BRITISH OFFICER. MADE IN 1959 THREE YEARS BEFORE LAWRENCE OF ARABIA WAS MADE. ANOTHER FILM I REMEMBERED SEEING IN MY PRE-TEEN DAYS ON BBC 1 (VERY EARLY 1970S). THE POLITICAL CORRECTNESS OF THE LAST 25 YEARS WOULD BAN THIS FILM FROM BROADCAST TODAY FOR FEAR OF UPSETTING JUST ABOUT EVERY CHARACTER IN THE FILM PORTRAYED--BUT THIS WAS A WELL MADE REALISTIC ADVENTURE FILM SET IN THE DAYS OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE -JUST 54 YEARS BEFORE 1959. LOOK OUT FOR THE TECHNICAL ADVISOR OF THE FILM ON THE PRE -FILM CREDITS.... HE SHOULD KNOW.....Read full review
