Recorded during the tour for 1994's SACRIFICE, the double CD DARK LIGHT is probably the most wide-ranging of Gary Numan's several live discs. This 25-track set is a balanced selection of songs covering his career all the way back to the first Tubeway Army record, including nearly all of his studio albums to date. The full band lineup, incorporating a pair of R&B-influenced female backing vocalists, has Numan splitting his time equally between guitar and keyboards. The band brings new life to oldies like "Everyday I Die," "Replicas," and Numan's signature song "Are Friends Electric?" while also loosening up more recent songs like "Stormtrooper In Drag" and "Do You Need the Service?" The sound is crystalline and the performance is tight, as befits the sonic sheen of these tunes, but never robotic. Essential for fans, and surprisingly effective for casual listeners.
