The transmitter is the thingy with the STOP and REC buttons. There's a battery in there: a 3 volt CR2032. The battery comes with the unit and should work fine. The receiver is the thingy with what looks like two little lights on it: one red, the other clear/white. The receiver is smaller than the transmitter and plugs into the top of the LS-10 recorder. These two components have to 'see' each other for the recorder to be turned on from a remote distance. So the two 'lights' on the receiver need to be pointed at the transmitter. When they're in alignment, they can see each other from about 20 feet away and the RS30 works perfectly. The red light on the receive lights up when it sees the transmitter and the REC button on the LS-10 also lights up when it activates. The LS-10 recorder must be turned on for the RS30 Remote Control to work. There are mixed (and very few) reviews about this unit on Amazon and other places. Some say it works great, others say it's junk. I'm guessing that those who say it's junk either had a dead battery in the transmitter or the receiver and transmitter did not see each other when the REC button was pushed. And, it's easy to be off-axis with this thing. I figure plus or minus 5 degrees out of alignment left, right, up or down and the transmit signal will miss the receiver. This is a handy little item for a group of musicians just noodling around or a recital.Read full review
