World War I is drawing to a close and Dorro Courtenay's passion for her younger sister's pilot boyfriend, Charlie Davenport, leads her down a dangerous path which requires her to completely reinvent herself. He is a much decorated WWI hero; charismatic, good looking, irresponsible and pursued by creditors. His financial inadequacies alone are sufficient to disqualify him as a future husband for Dorro's beautiful sister, Bessie, but on top of that he also attracts establishment disapproval for being a practical joker who takes everything to extremes. However, at 18 years of age Bessie is rebellious, does what she likes and is determined to marry the man that her parents disapprove of. She is as outrageous and daring as Dorro is quiet and responsible. Resigned to living without Charlie, Dorro goes through with the marriage to her long standing fiancee, Arthur, only to begin a passionate affair with Charlie on her wedding day.
