GREAT Movie ! My only complaint is that there was no disc in the case.....But it IS or rather " WAS " a really great movie.Clint Eastwood could'nt have been more than 30 years old and nobody is more irascible than Lee Marvin ! You do need to have an " Intermission " though because your butt needs a break in a 2 1/2 hr movie .And the rendition of " They call the wind Mariah " under that huge tree in the rain was really powerful ! The whole soundtrack and premise is tremendously entertaining !!!!!! Could'nt be better unless there was a cd in the case...lol !

When I watched this version of Paint Your Wagon I was struck by the re-choreography done in working around the scene where in the original production (i.e., before the law suits) Clint Eastwood sings the Chicks and Ducks and Geese tune (Surrey With the Fringe On Top, c. 1955), borrowed from the musical, Oklahoma, as sung by Gordon MacRae. In this version of Paint Your Wagon we find a dyslexic mishmash of rearranged scenes that departs substantially from the original chronology. Some of the best scenes, IMO, were scrubbed in attempting to proffer a marketable product that would be safe from further criticism from the Rogers and Hammerstein camp. The song, They Call the Wind Mariah, is original in the sense that it was presented in the earlier Broadway stage production of Paint Your Wagon, C. 1953. All in all this 'final' presentation still offers a boistrous romp through tongue-in-cheek western comedy. But the buyer might be better off looking for an older version in which Eastwood (almost) sings the now-stricken surrey song. . . . That was the version I searched for but was unable to find.Read full review

The musical is realistic; the plot intrigued me me, the score and songs were lush, & yet few of the actors can truly sing. The Nitty Gritty Dirt band is also featured.

A classic! Every second is spectacular. The story, the music, the humor all blends perfectly. Lee Marvin actually sings (I Was Born Under a Wanderin' Star). His mining partner Clint Eastwood sings too, but is not so memorable. The song Mariah is so moving. The bull chase is hilarious; so is the bride auction. Through it all, you get a pretty good picture of the American Gold Rush.
