I’ve used Asahi Pentax film equipment since 1967, shooting professionally with in succession an H3V, a Spotmatic, a 6x7, a K1000SE, and an MX (ten years ago I went to Pentax DSLRs). The H1 is a reliable, compact, easy-to-hold 35mm SLR offering just what you need for fully-manual analog photography. No batteries are required as there are no electronics or motors to fail. Focus is easy as the viewfinder is bright. The shutter holds its designed speeds well over the years. Pentax H1 and H3 cameras have proven to be the equal of Nikkormat and the original Nikon F bodies in terms of reliability; I say this based on 50 years’ hands-on experience. When shopping for an H1 or H3V, look for a clean body – that’ll indicate that the camera has not been mis-handled nor stored in humid conditions. Ask the seller to verify that the shutter speeds are reasonably accurate. Don’t worry about the film door seals and mirror bumper; they are easy to replace. The superb legacy Takumar glass for these cameras comes in the one of the most popular and universally-used lens mounts: the threaded M42. You can mount any Takumar lens ever made to Pentax, Practica, some Fujica, Edixaflex, and Zenit cameras – and you can also mount those cameras' lenses on the Pentax H1. Thousands of lenses can be found in the used market, from el cheapo offbrands through Zeiss glass -- and many can be had at bargain prices.Read full review
