Peter, Paul & Mary: Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey (vocals, guitar); Mary Travers (vocals). Although the Weavers' Lee Hays and Pete Seeger wrote "If I Had a Hammer" in the early 1950s, the group never recorded the song in their original incarnation. Until Peter, Paul and Mary released it as their second single in the summer of 1963, it was a fairly obscure tune even in folkie circles. Their spirited rendition of Hays and Seeger's tune quickly became an enormous pop success and also turned the song into an anthem for the collegiate folk revival, guaranteed to appear at least once in every campus hootenanny well into the '70s. It's also the showpiece of Peter, Paul and Mary's self-titled debut album, one of the best-selling folk records of all time.
