A lot of things. First, this was a great value and everything is in great shape. The album is not their first. It is one of their best. This is where a movement started. All the anti glam rock, hair rock, pop and bubblegum starts here. Alt rock started with the jangle rock of REM and this is where it was noticed. By Rolling Stone of all people. Not my favorite now but in the day Rolling Stone was insightful. "Radio Free Europe" was named single of the year and it wasn't Michael Jackson. "Talk about the Passion" "Sitting Still" were to follow. The first really big stuff like "End of the World as we Know it" and Fall on me" were following on the next albums. College radio exploded and REM burst out with oddities such a the Cure, Husker Du and the Replacements were to follow. A solid album that leads credo to The IRS years being essentially the best albums from this band. There's about half a dozen. Buy them. No auto tune needed.Read full review

I love most REM (particularly that before Bill Berry's departure), and this is the album that started the whole thing. Songs like "Radio Free Europe" proved to the world that this was no ordinary band, and the follow up songs (and albums that later followed) cement that idea in stone. REM has turned out to be one of the more influential alternative rock bands out there since the release of this album. While MURMUR's songs at times seem just like that (a murmur), they are interesting to listen to. Michael Stipe's lyrics are not as sharp or crystal clear on this album, but that's the style they stuck with for their first three or four albums. After that, the vocals were much sharper and easier to hear (and interpret, for that matter). I think of the album as being almost dream-like, and it was quite revolutionary for the time. However, I think the sharpness of Stipe's voice and growth as a songwriter make the next few albums a bit better. Make sure this is a part of your REM collection, and skip others like Out of Time and Reveal. But don't miss the original four's great finale--"New Adventures in Hi-Fi".Read full review
I have always Dabbled in the sounds of Alternative rock as far as taste goes.... but until recently I have really started opening my ears to band's such as R.E.M. , The Beatles and Husker Du! I bought the original album on CD but will be buying the Deluxe ANNIVERSARY EDITION as well because Mur Mur is that GOOD! no favorite tracks because I love the album as a whole. And the cover is COOL it's also neat to see how young these guys were in the inner sleeve.Read full review

REM early on, but with one of the hits that defined them. A great album, by a band that stands the test of time.
