In 1971, I got to know Roy Buchanan during his gig with the Snakestretchers, at Crossroads, in Bladensburg, Md. He was an easygoing, non-rock star kind of guy that was down to earth, a nice guy. But, when he strapped on his Telecaster, he could tear the place down anytime he wanted - and he did just that quite often. He nicknamed me "Preacher Man," telling me that my attire reminded him of when his father was a preacher. I never saw him again after he and the band moved on. However, I always wondered what he was up to, how he was doing. The news of his death, in 1988, was very saddening to me. Since then, I have wanted to know more about Roy but never came across any source for such information. Until I purchased Phil Carson's book, American Axe. Several months before my birthday this year, I saw an ad online for the book and put it at the top of my birthday wish-list. Frankly, I had no idea what value the book might be but I was willing to take the chance. Soon after unwrapping my birthday gift, I dove into Mr. Carson's book. Now, after having read it thoroughly, I can honestly say that this book is a gem. I think Phil Carson has accurately depicted Roy Buchanan's talent and persona, taking his readers from the place of his birth, through childhood, adolescence and directly into Roy's almost non-stop life on the road, doing what he did best, playing his guitar. This account of Roy's life does not sugarcoat his human challenges. In balance, there is a temperance of good taste and respect on the part of the author. This was a story that needed to be told and was too important to tell in half measures. Mr. Carson did it the right way, using excellent writing skills and a lots of patience. Thirty five years after seeing Roy Buchanan for the last time, remembering my sitting back stage with him, drinking a Schlitz and showing him my blues licks, I am honoring those moments in my life more than ever. Thanks to Phil Carson and his book, American Axe, I know a whole lot more about Roy than I ever did before. Thank you, Phil, and Thank you, Roy Buchanan.Read full review
