Golf is personal. All the lessons and instructions come down to teeing off on Sunday morning. You are standing on the tee and try to figure out how to beat your index that day. 50% of the par strokes are putting strokes. On the green, it is the only place where golf is not depending on your triceps, torso and swing speed. Where big and tall guys have absolutely no advantage. Like all golfers, we try to fine the best fit equipment (okay, and look) for ourselves to make us confident (and look good) on the course. We spend endless time and try every possible opportunity to get a deal on the "one" piece that we think can help us to achieve the golf utopia. Okay, I am going to far! This putter has been in my bag for more then 8 years. I have change different grips, cut it in different lengths, bent it for different lies to make sure the ball does not "pop" off the face with my stroke. It has been tuned to have the highest percentage of hitting the sweet spot and transfer the feel of my vision to follow the balls into the hole. The manufacture does not make this model any more. They have to develop new products in able to attract new business. And after all the years of investment to make my putter perfect, I need a backup. That is why I have been searching for a perfect replica of this putter. I have been careful and patient selecting the identical putter. Since eBay is a perfect place to seek obsolete products. That is where I look and found. The black finish of the putter minimize the reflection from bright day light and absorb heat from a cold day. We all need a "hot" putter, right? Anyway, the "warm" putter will keep moisture away and absorb protective oil based product that you apply to prevent rust. Without proper care, this putter will rust. It is the only downside to this putter as it is considered "high maintenance". The cast iron material make this putter a great instrument for feeding back the contact of the golf balls which is absolutely critical for putter. Because putting is all about feel. None of the great putters in the history of golf is a "mechanical" putter. Feel rates the most important aspect of a putting stroke. Dave Pelz, the master of the short game, also characterize and transform "mechanics" to "feel" as the most important aspect of the short game, including putting. Personally, I do not feel any "filled" or "duel" material putters give you the actual feel of the stroke and contact of the ball. Because the material is trying to make the contact of golf ball feel otherwise "softer". An artificially injected and transformed, to me, inconsistent of delivery of the true feel. This putter is a single piece milled with true feedback. The weight of the putter is amazingly balanced. The high precision manufacture technology today made possible to have absolutely the same weight and balance of putters being mass produced time after time. Titleist and Scott Cameron quality are proven, tour proven, if that means anything. The rest is up to us -- pick a putter that really "fits" you. And I did and I did again on eBay. Why else I would buy a second one, silly.Read full review
I chose the Studio Design 1.5 due to its simple classic design and the high reviews that I have read about. I went with Black Pearl, Mid-Slant classic design that came out from 2003 through 2005. This putter requires dedicated practice due to its soft feedback off the face. Because it is so deceiving soft, the proper stroke needs to be developed in order to be able to judge distances. The ball does not jump off the face, even with a full applied stroke. The force of the roll is very tempered and consistent. I feel that this putter is the most effective from the 25 foot range and under. The Black Pearl finish radiates all on its own characteristics depending on the lighting and time of day. When the sun is high, the colors are more brighter and the top line, heal/toe is a few shade darker. When the sun is going down, the whole putter looks different altogether as the spectrum of colors (uniformed pattern across the entire putter) does not present an overblown eyesore. At night under artificial lighting, the putter has a black glow to it and so, the silhouette is very easy to see at night. The balance of the 1.5 is incredibly stable, even with my wavering stroke. The sweet spot is huge in my opinion. My impact marks is about the size of a pressed index finger tip. I now wished that I had invested in my putting game with a higher quality putter long ago. I feel that all this time with other putters (Callaway s2h2 #2, Cleveland Form Forged III and TM Nubbins) was a waste of valuable time. The short time that I have spent with the 1.5, gives me a better understanding of feel, feedback, consistency and appreciation of what at well made putter is all about. Because, I am finding myself to be drawn to the feel at impact of this putter, it will be very difficult to find another model that provides the same characteristics. Therefore, I feel that at the minimum, I will probably putt with a Scotty till the end of my golf days. If you are reading these reviews, I take it that you are seeking a well made putter that provides all the qualities that is expected in a well made classic design. The one thing that I would recommend, is that see what the putter looks like at address to find out if all the lines are where they are supposed to me in your eyes. I cannot emphasize enough about the feel at impact. It truly is quite addictive. At times, depending on the ball that it used, the ball seems to stay on the face of the putter for more than a nano second with an incredible feel and response. They did this model right. There is not need for improvement. She is that good.Read full review
I am very serious about high-end putters. In this case, the Studio Design line was one of the few soft carbon steel production putters available from famous Scotty Cameron. Most of his putters are stainless steel—which require less maintenance. It is very important to keep these carbon steel putters wiped-down after every round, with a silicone "oil cloth." Not only does carbon steel feel softer but many of these putters also carry the rich-looking, desirable black oxide finish, which is also prized for its soft-feel effect. There were about 7 models of Studio Designs manufactured between 2001 and 2005. I love these putters because they not only putt wonderfully, they look great. They have a very distinctive, colorful paint scheme (primarily on the sole) and a famously distinctive "screaming yellow" headcover. In this case, flow-neck (instead of the more-mechanical looking plumber's or slant-neck) 1.5s were only made in 2001 and 2002.Read full review
This is an outstanding putter. I particularly like the weighting, grip and the refined look. The putter is easy to hold with only very light grip pressure and the ball comes off the face with almost no effort. The only thing that you need to learn is how much force to apply. I use about 2/3 if the force that I used to apply to my old Callaway putter and get the same shot length using this putter.
Perfect roll, great craftmanship, so spend a little extra and your putting catergory is set for life. The black finish reduces glare and the set-up is easy. Scotty has done countless hours of putter research and this one could be his finest blade creation.
