Additional information
Soul-jazz legend Stanley Turrentine released this solid, blues-drenched date in 1963. With help from trumpeter Blue Mitchell, bassist Earl May, drummer Al Harewood, and organist Shirley Scott (who was also Turrentine's wife), the leader steams through five tunes that honor Count Basie, including "One O'Clock Jump" and "Blues in Hoss' Flat." The presence of Scott's organ, and the soulful playing of Turrentine and Mitchell, give these takes on big-band classics a fresh, groovy twist without losing any of the requisite swing.
