I am a huge fan of paranormal romances as well as historical romances. This book failed on both fronts. The characters and plot were so uninspiring that I had to force myself to finish the book in the vain hope that it would improve--it didn't. I truly didn't care about either character and the paranormal aspect seemed almost an afterthought. Far more time was spent on the effects of laudanum addiction than the romance or paranormal aspects. It is tricky to combine historical romance with supernatural/fantasy romance and Squires does give it a good try. The writing itself is fine. More time should have been taken to develop the characters and romance. For a nice historical and paranormal romance, give Teresa Medeiros's After Midnight a try.
