Additional information
Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyborads); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums). Recorded in Stockholm, Sweden in 1970. Includes liner notes by Simon Robinson. This two-disc set does a good job of building on Deep Purple's already strong staying power in the classic-rock world. Although this disc relies more on the rambling jam elements of the musicians, providing only seven songs over two discs, the power and energy of this live performance is enough to convince anyone of the quality of the music produced. From the first note of the opener "Speed King," to the last of closer "Black Night," the listener is taken on a wild ride through wide landscapes of Jon Lord's almost gospel-like organ melodies, and guitar great Ritchie Blackmore's bluesy rock riffs. One highlight is the cleverly adapted Rolling Stones classic "Paint It Black." Each instrument gets its time in the spotlight, though, including the eclectic and bombastic percussion with a lengthy, pulse-pounding solo. Topped off by the rafter-shaking vocals of Ian Gillian, this set flaunts the obvious talents of Deep Purple as a whole, making for a robust musical experience.
