I love this lens! I got it because I wanted an inexpensive lens with a wide aperture. This lens fits the bill exactly! I've shot with this lens in a dimmly lit church with just the built in flash on my camera (Rebel Xsi) and it takes georgeous pictures in low light. MUCH better than the kit lens I got with my camera. I've sense bought a 430ex II flash and now the lens is taking really great pictures in almost any lighting conditions so far. And I got it for $100 less than I could purchase it anywhere else, and its in mint condition from ebay!
The lens lists for around $600. It's commonly available for $449. I bought it for a hundred dollars less than that from Pardee Cameras in Sacramento online via ebay. I was looking for better optics than the lens that came with my canon T2i body. I plan on shooting HD video with this combination as well as still images. The video it produces is super sharp which I attribute as much to the lens as the body components and internal settings. For still pictures, the 2.8 maximum aperture is as bright as much more expensive lenses and another reason why I bought the sigma. The images it produces look like they are taken by more expensive canon lenses. It is completely compatible to the canon AF and auto stabilisation systems, as well. It feels solid, but not heavy. The focus ring and zoom are tight, not loose and plastic-y. I would say the only downside to this lens is the macro isn't powerful enough for the subjects I'm shooting. That is, fishing flies and aquatic insects. But Zeiko's teleconnecter kit compensates nicely. And with the sigma lens and teleconnecters between it and the body, I can get close enough on very small subjects. Overall, I'm well satisfied with the sigma lens. The optics are terrific for the price. The lens feels substantial, not cheap like so many of the lenses coming with canon and nikon kits. I hope this helps and, if you decide to purchase this lens, you spend as many happy hours with it as I have.Read full review
Just got my 17-70 lens in and tested it out! I had done research on websites and YouTube for a type of lens I could buy and this was my decision. Came in the mail and it was basically brand new, other than for picture purposes to advertise the lens on ebay; no scuffs or scratches seen so far.

This is the best value I've found for an image stabilized lens in this price range. The auto focus is fast in wide variety of lighting. The images are crisp. With the image stabilization (which I used to mock) makes getting a good shot so much easier. What used to take 3-6 shots to get a good image is usually done in one and at the most two. The barrel of the lens is 72mm as oppose to my old lens of 58mm. This means I can get wide angle shots without having a wide angle lens or having to put on a wide angle lens accessory. With an aperture of 2.8 it doesn't make low light photography magic, but a lot easier.
Great upgrade to the kit lens - takes nice wide angle and macro stuff but also has a bit of zoom for some great framing options. Is it built like a Canon? No! It's plastic mostly - which makes it lighter - but I do question the long term viability of the construction. Clarity is phenomenal for the price however - especially used. Overall, great all around versatile lens for just about any application with a nice range of focus and low 2.8 aperture. For the price you really can't go wrong - give it a shot! (no pun intended!)
