Speech amplification devices enhance the output of a person's natural voice for more effective and clear communication, however, each device may work a little differently and little data has been done on these devices. The purpose of this study was to investigate the contributing factors of SLP's decision-making in the selection of different speech amplification devices and the types of populations upon which they are used. The four specific devices compared were the Speech Enhancer, the ChattervoxRTM, the EchoVoice(TM) EV4, and the Spokeman. One hundred and eighteen subjects replied and were analyzed on all demographic questions. Only the 62 subjects that had appropriately placed speech amplification devices on patients were analyzed on the second half of the survey. Results indicated that SLPs have little knowledge of speech amplification devices and more research needs to be completed to help SLPs educate themselves on these devices.
