Variously described by the music press as a humble pop group for the 80s, an aggro rock outfit, and a post-tribal dance band, The Takeaways formed in Sydney mid-1983 as a four-piece with a drum machine. By 1984 they'd replaced the drum machine with near human being Johnny Black and recorded the independent single 'Sweet and Sour'. The single received wide alternative airplay and The Takeaways toured Melbourne and where favourably received by the more discriminating punters. The band played all original songs but had so far eluded commercial success. 'Sweet and Sour' is the story of their battle to get a record contract and make it big in the Australian music scene.
