I have a close friend that I have known for 80 years and she has alzheimers disease--which is a very cruel disease and very unfair, as it takes away the brain power from people who have lived a very active and productive life. When I saw the book "Still Alice' and learned that it was a story about a woman who taught at Harvard University and one day as she started to walk home after her class, she couldn't remember how to get home. This was the beginning, and she wisely went to her Dr. and after he performed several tests on her, he informed her that she had dementia. That is how it starts. 'Still Alice' is well written and taught me a lot about what to expect as the disease progressed. As I live near my friend and see her often, the most important thing to remember is to be KIND, NON JUDGEMENTAL AND GIVE PLENTY OF TLCRead full review
I am caring for my mother with mid stage alzheimer's disease. The book so poigniantly portrays an accomplished woman struck in her mid life with this terrible disease. It also portrays some of the positive things that come out of the family dynamics. I say it's a must read for anyone trying to gain insight into the feelings of someone with alzheimer's and the possible family dynamics that go with the disease process. The author also includes resources for patients and family in the last chapter of the book. I hope to be able to pass this onto other members of my family so they can gain insight into the disease.
this was recomended to me by a friend that is going through this with her 54 yr old husband. she felt like someone had been following them around for 4 years, it was their story. i am the care giver for my 82 year old mother that is going throught this disease. the book was very good and helped me understand what my mother is thinking and doesnt say. i couldnt put it down until i was finished with it. i am mailing it to my sister. even if you are not personally going through this with someone, chances are you will eventually. a great story for anyone.
Genova takes a large and ultimately successful risk in writing a novel about Alzheimer's Disease from the perspective of the afflicted individual. Evidently she spoke with similar patients and attempted to give us a glimpse into the world they inhabit. Hard to say how accurate she is, but the unusual angle gave me new insight into who the AD patient is and continues to be. Will have significance in my practice and personal relationships with those with dementia. Overall, a quick, well-written, and touching read with a noble purpose.
This is an essential read for anyone who knows someone with Alzheimer's. Reading Still Alice, I felt like I was seeing life through Alice's eyes as she watched her brilliant mind deteriorate steadily. Then her physical capabilities began to decline. It truly is like something Alfred Hitchcock would write as a horror story and yet it is real. And it happens to people we know. And it happens with alarming frequency. The book reads like it is true although it is fiction. Educational, sad, haunting and well-written...I recommend this book.
