I've got this motherboard running with a Xeon quad core, 16GB of ECC RAM, two Dell Perc H200 SAS cards, and a 10gbe Mellanox card. It's running freeNAS bare metal and is perfectly suited for this job. As it's an older generation platform, it's easy to put together a server for under $100. And performance-wise, it's fast enough to handle most server duties. The IPMI feature is also nice to have for remote control, reboots, and maintenance without ever touching the physical machine. Be aware that you must have "2Rx4" memory, which can be difficult to find.

Need a NAS or some other type of server that isn't extremely compute heavy? This is for you. Not exactly a board for extremely heavy lifting (only one CPU socket), but for more storage or ram centric tasks, you can't beat it. DDR3 lets this board run cooler than any of the DDR2 boards available for a similar price on ebay. In fact, this replaced a DDR2 server that had overheating ram for less than I paid for the original machine. I got the bundle, and couldn't have found a better deal anywhere else. Running FreeNAS on it, and it performs like a dream. Also, there's an internal USB port(not just a header) right on the board, so if you want to boot from a USB stick inside the case, this will do it. Couldn't be happier.

This board is a compromised version (because of pcie bus and cpu compatibilities, sound and USB availability) of a intel dx58so. It is much less expensive, and with a xeon3400 series chip, and a gt730 x8 gpu and same memory configurations a competitor! I am talking a huge savings for a box where serious and extreme gaming are not an issue, but gaming is still an important consideration. Sound is NOT built in. You should add USB (3.0 good idea!) as it is lean on that too, big blunder. In an ATX case, you must obtain an IO shield that snaps, not screws like the one with the squared grid. Always use an IO shield to keep outside world out don't be a newb.

Motherboard arrived in great and clean condition. Booted just fine with correct hardware. Only docked it one star because the IO plate did not match the motherboard. Minor issue.
