After watching friends who were also single digit handicappers buy new clubs and improve I decided it was my time. My 10 yr. old Callaways were just not forgiving enough and the mishits were costing me dearly. I tried a variety of irons and shaft combinations at a nearby golf course, even getting the $50 fitting to determine loft, lie etc. I went in expecting to buy an updated Callaway club or perhaps Pings, which several buddies had bought. Near the end of the session I was leaning toward a Cleveland club and the guy said try the Taylormade Burners. I had heard that these clubs were long and straight and that has proven to be the case. I went for the steel shaft R flex version and would agree that they are both. I have always hit the ball low and continue to do so with these, although I am finding that when I stay behind the ball and swing smoothly the ball does get up in the air a bit more. I think the clubs are probably a degree or two on the strong side but apparently most are these days. My distance control is still a work in progress, at times hitting my 8 iron 155 yds. at other times chunking it much shorter distances. These mishits are not the fault of the club but are to suggest the clubs aren't magical and that there is still work to be done...such is golf. I have been most impressed with shots on par 3's which have become easier to hit with less effort. Even shots that I thin or strike poorly seem to find the green a good deal of the time. My handicap has dropped from a 9 (high for me) back down to 7, trending lower still, in just a couple of months... so I am encouraged. I would say that the Burners are a solid feeling club that has helped my game and with a bit more practice time I should continue to improve. At 64 I'll take whatever help I can get. Also, by purchasing my irons on ebay I saved $150 or so and got an excellent set of clubs. I would suggest that if you are in the market for a game improving club that is fairly forgiving you might give these a try.Read full review
I assume a lot of the negatives regarding this set must be due to the stock shafts??? I can not stress enough that you should always demo clubs and get fitted before buying a set of golf clubs... I personally tend to only use Project X and Dynamic Gold shafts and they usually weigh 120+ grams... with that said the stock shaft in the 2009 Burner did not perform well for me... I always love trying out new clubs and read all about the new KBS shafts... TaylorMade offered them as an upgrade so I decided to try/demo the new Burner with the KBS Tour stiff flex shafts... To make a long story short I got on eBay after hitting my demo club and bought a set to play the second half of this year... I have not been disappointed!!! The Burner fitted with a top of the line KBS shaft outperformed both my Titleist sets with Project X shafts... I ended up selling all of my Titleist irons, hybrids, and wedges... Switched to the TaylorMade Burner line with all KBS Tour shafts... I have since lowered my handicap another 4 strokes!!! Performance: I have seen more of a consistent mid/high ball flight with this combination and a gain of almost 10 yards in distance... I have my clubs at standard club lengths which is shorter than the listed lengths of the stock TM Burner shafts... The heads are not big and bulky like most game improvement irons... I was able to work the ball and on an occasional mishit the set was very forgiving... The only issue I have had is actually been with the longer irons in the set because they are more off set than the rest of the clubs... after a few adjustments and course time I have no complaints... Some may ask why I did not try the Titleist sets with the KBS shafts... The reason is mainly due to durability/wear because both AP iron sets are very soft and after only 15 rounds they looked like a 2-year-old set of clubs... The price tag of the Titleist set was not worth it in the long run... With all of that said two of my regular golf buddies have since tried my clubs and have them on order as we speak... If you have an opportunity to demo this club or any club with the new KBS shaft, I highly recommend that you do!!!Read full review
I had tried these clubs previously as rentals and was impressed by the clubs, with stock shafts. They were easy to hit and had good distance. However, having previously owned Taylor Made irons and woods (metals) I was not impressed with the stock shafts. Therefore the irons I purchased had the Nippon shafts, which are steel but very light, because I wanted to feel the clubhead more during my swing. They replaced my Callaway irons with Project X shafts, and I much prefer the Nippons. To be completely honest, I think one should find a clubhead that they like, but the shaft is as important, if not more important, than the clubhead. Update, took these clubs to clubfitter and he told me that they were likely fake clubs. I bought a new set directly from Taylor Made and the seller is no longer doing business.Read full review
I was a little hesitant at first when deciding to purchase these clubs. I am not a low handicap golfer and was really torn between these clubs and the burner plus series (as they are designed for a high handicap). I will say that unless you have a severe slice/hook or little to no swing consistency, than these clubs are an excellent choice. The low irons are very easy to hit and very long, I hit the 4 iron about 15-20 yards short of my typical drive, roughly 230. The clubs definitely add distance, but also give a very nice feel to the swing, as if they are guiding your down-swing in the right direction (could have to do with the lower COG of the club). The 6/7/8 feel like your typical club with a healthy mix of forgiveness and but also shot control (they are not just going to fly straight). the 9/pitching/sand have much more feel and allow you to really work the ball, I have a natural draw to my shot and it is reflected but not accentuated in these clubs. That said I still hit bad shots now and then (as I assume you will as well) but these clubs really make the good shots feel great. A great set for a great price (really liked Jack's golf, look for his ebay store). I think these clubs are a good choice for anyone looking to bring out the best parts of their game without accentuating the bad parts. For comparison to yourself I am around a 15-20 handicap, play about two full rounds a week. I am certainly not a great golfer, I have my double bogie holes, and bad shots, but I don't think this set was necessarily designed for the low handicapper as Taylormade says it is. Works well for me and I think it will work well for you as well.Read full review
It is touted as being one of the easiest and longest club set you can hit. The package arrived and I was very impressed with the finish and style of the irons. Good looking club! I was all set to try them out on the course but figured I'd give them a try on the range before I did. I had great difficulty in getting good feel for the clubs. I currently own Ping G10 irons and have been mostly happy with them as far as control, but wanted more distance and punch to my irons. The distance is there but I never felt as if I had total control of the clubs. After three rounds, went back to my Pings and THAT is where I'm staying until Ping says there is something better. I got a great deal on EBAY for the clubs and was able to sell them for the same amount,,so all is well.
