For her first film in two years Universal hired respected French director Jean Renoir to helm what was to be Deannas first dramatic role. However when the film was released it included songs and the directors credit went to Bruce Manning, the films producer. Miss Durbin plays missionary Ruth Kirke, who passes herself off as rich widow Mrs. Holliday in order to smuggle a group of Chinese orphans into the US with the help of sympathetic ships steward Barry Fitzgerald. Complications arise when she uses the Holliday mansion to house the children and falls in love with her late husbands grandson (Edmond OBrien). And even more so when Mr. Holliday himself returns from the dead! Nominated for an Academy Award for Hans Salter and Frank Skinners musical score. Musical highlights include Vissi DArte form Puccinis Tosca, Mighty Laka Rose, Lullaby, The Old Refrain.
