I have now lived with the PL880 radio for a bit over a month. In my view this is a good general use shortwave radio with great facilities, however.. ...if one wants to use it for amateur communications, is far from ideal. The audio of this receiver is more suited to music broadcasts rather than communications. The sound is far to soft / bass heavy (even in the 'treble' setting) for crystal clear communications performance. The lack of tone control, other than the switch 'bass - treble' on the side, is a big setback for receiving transmissions other than broadcast stations. The reception on FM and AM bands, both on the broadcast band or shortwave stations is very good, selectivity is well above average and sensitivity is also very good. The BFO for USB and LSB reception is working fine, only if the tonality of the audio was a bit more sharp. Other than that, it's a very good value for the money and the only thing that I would like to see added to it, is the Air Band addition, like it's cheaper 'brother' the PL660 provides.Read full review

The radio's controls, such as tuning and volume, have a quality feel and movement. Tuning is precise and the sound comes through with good tone and base. Features are reasonably easy to figure out.

Does what it is supposed to, it pulls stations with weak signals, although my older and smaller Sangean 633 does just as well, if not a little better. I was hoping for something much better when I ordered the Tecsun 880, but I was disappointed. Perhaps an AM aerial might eliminate the interference noise (to be fair, my place is low-lying and surrounded by hills and tall buildings). I have yet to try it outdoors in an elevated area. An external AM aerial jack should have been included.

This radio was set up for use in the USA, but it was a simple matter of using an Aust. charger and replacing the Lithium Iron battery and every thing works well.

Amazing, nicely designed good sounding radio. Can't pick up much on the short wave bands with telescopic antenna or wire antenna provided. Yet to set an external antenna. Doesn't seem to be much on short wave these days. AM and FM are excellent reception and the tuning is user friendly.
