Excellent historical tome.
I got the book to read before I went on the Rhine River castle cruise to help understand the area I'd be travelling through. It was excellent in that regard, although I learned much more than just the geography and I continued to read the book while on the boat! Writer covers from the medieval times nearly up to the present day, and is able to address some of the past wars and political issues with perception and precision. Highly recommend to anyone needing to know about this area of Europe, from Basel to Amsterdam.
