Egoscue Method - great for back pain plagued athletes
I had a massive disc rupture which resulted in surgery last year, and have purchased half a dozen books in attempts at preventing future problems and understanding biomechanics of what may have led to the rupture. This book has been particularly helpful with its illustrations and stretches, while explaining the dysfunctional hip concept, one of the main culprits of my back problems. I have been battling the back issues for almost twenty years while maintaining an athletic lifestyle, mostly with cycling and running, and wish someone could have explained everything a long time ago, possibly avoiding the consequences I experienced. I strongly recommend the Egoscue book to athletes who use repetitive motion - for both preventitive and therapeutic needs associated with musculoskelatal pain. This book, along with pilates (such as Colleen Craig's "Abs on Ball," and Brooke Siler's "The Pilates Book"), and various yoga books or DVDs would help make a great library of resources for such athletes. Before I discovered this book, and after my surgery, I was convinced that I would not be able to prevent future problems with the same disc or others until I gained control of my faulty biomechanics. The book has helped reinforce this belief and helped with the stretches/exercises I didn't see in other books or with physical therapy. I feel more confident now I can maintain a more injury-free athletic lifestyle.Read full review

Egoscue really works
A nurse who had a daughter with cerebral palsy recommended this book to me. There was a problem with the girl's left leg swing-through pattern that was interfering with her walking progress. They had tried different things for 10 years and doctors were thinking surgery was indicated. The mom wasn't convinced. She found this book, put her daughter on the Egoscue program and the leg settled into its proper function. I am a journalist who had carpal tunnel for several years. Wearing hand braces and taking Vitamin B6 kept me out of surgery until I found this book. I identified myself as a type1 piggybacked on a type2. By doing one set of exercises in the AM and the other at night, I was able to work out of carpal tunnel in three months. The Egoscue therapist told me this condition was a shoulder issue and widening the carpal tunnel would not resolve the shoulder issue. She was correct. A friend who crocheted a lot had the surgery three times and it didn't help. My mother had the surgery and it didn't help Another friend with back issues only got worse in the course of three surgeries that included putting rods in her back. My husband does the exercises and doesn't have nighttime leg shake. Both of my son's have benefitted from the ecises. The body can heal itself given the chance to strengthen the muscles that have abandoned their function because of our dysfunctional modern life style. I discovered that I had other posture issues in addition to those that caused carpal tunnel and am working successfully on them. Egoscue takes time and money that most of us don't want to devote to exercises, but better to fix things now than wind up paying for a nursing home later because we have painted ourselves into corners by refusing to take responsibility for our health. I'm 67 and can still get up and down from the floor, sit cross-legged on the floor, climb the steps to the Washington Monument, walk five miles and lots of other things that I couldn't do before Egoscue. Time to get on the Right Track ! Our bodies can heal themselves !
I bought this product because of a Physical Therapists' recommendation. I am a massage therapist, and reflexologist. I have back pain. Pete E. helps us connect and balance our physical bodies, with simple positions/ "E cises" that put joints into alignment, and most often the pain goes away. Makes excellent sense to me. Easy easy to read and grasp the information. If I can do it well.....odds are so can you !

Why we have body pain and how to heal.
I think this book should be required reading for every High School pupil. It's about the Human body being built for "motion". And in this world of electronics taking over for everything that prevents that "motion", we've entered a time of aches and pains as the result. A great read!
